The current condition of the plant and its components can be determined using on-line diagnostics systems for monitoring vibration and fatigue. Servicing and upgrading can therefore be performed as condition-based activities, as and when required.

Generator Services - on-site engineering.
Generator Services are centered at Penn Hall located in Pittsburgh, PA. Generator Services provide product line engineering, project planning and personnel assignment. Technical service development is also ongoing at the Productivity and Technology Development Center.The Penn Hall mission is supplying services most effective to specific unit conditions and operating objectives. Supporting this goal are 200 special skills engineers and technicians, trained and tested to the work they perform. Some are also qualified to ASNT standard and all have proven their competency according to stringent requirements. Through their efforts, our capabilities are developed and effectively performed in service to generator systems – including , Westinghouse and other major manufacturers.
The industry approach to inspection and maintenance is moving from a reactive to a predictive mode. This transition is driven by efforts to optimize the O&M budget while maximizing unit availability. Optimizing generator maintenance programs to achieve a predictive mode requires selection and application of state-of-the-art techniques.
Generator Evaluation Services - on-site engineering.
When used in a program of periodic inspection, FAST Gen evaluation also includes trend analysis of unit-specific conditions over time. Unit-specific trends are formulated and further refined with each periodic inspection. Through repeat inspections, trends can be used to predict unit conditions and, thus, to refine plans for preventive maintenance to the generator’s specific needs.
Working in this predictive mode, the utility gains control in making informed decisions for cost-effective maintenance, in time for budget and maintenance planning
In response to industry needs, has developed Generator Evaluation Services (FAST Gen) using state-of-the-art technologies, electronics and miniaturized robotics. FAST Gen II technology, introduced in 1990 has proven itself as a safe and thorough minimum disassembly method to inspect the turbine generator with the rotor in-situ. The FAST Gen inspection service has now been enhanced by emerging technologies and new materials. The upgraded collection of services is called FAST Gen III.
FAST Gen III inspection technology enables the utility or industrial user to extend the time between rotor out inspections, progressing from a corrective maintenance philosophy to a predictive maintenance philosophy through judicial use of advanced inspection technology and trending analysis.
