A typical application requiring a compressor is the crude oil and gas separation process. When oil comes out of a well, it still contains a significant amount of gas. The oil/gas flow is sent to a separator, where the gas bubbles out of the oil at a certain pressure. In order to keep the pressure constant, the gas thus released is removed by a compressor. There can be several stages in this process, with different pressure levels. The compressor(s) will boost the pressure to the required levels for use in applications such as gas lift or export.
The required gas pressure depends on the working pressure of the separator, but is typically between 5 and 30 bar (70 - 450 psi).
