A key feature of the system is the large amount of heat required in the reboiler to regenerate the solvent. This heat is typically drawn from the low pressure steam cycle and significantly reduces the net efficiency of the power plant. Electrical energy is also needed to compress the captured CO2 for transport by pipeline to a storage site. The development activities on reducing the energy consumption of the capture unit and optimizing the behavior of the solvent with regard to oxygen and other components in the flue gas. Solvent degradation and solvent losses in the scrubber and stripper must be reduced to a minimum. The Post-Combustion technology will preferably be applied to coal-fired power plants (higher CO2 concentrations, base-load operation) but can essentially also be applied to gas-fired power plants.
