Natural gas, when cooled down to around -160 °C (-258 °F) at atmospheric conditions, becomes liquefied natural gas (LNG). Converting from gas to liquid reduces the volume to 1/600, which makes the medium economically transportable via ocean-bound LNG carriers.
Along the whole LNG supply chain (production, transportation and re-gasification), the product is bunkered at cryogenic temperatures in large-scale storage tanks. Due to heat leakages, natural gas continuously evaporates from the LNG. This is called Boil-Off Gas (BOG).
While the BOG generation during LNG carrier transportation is rather small and constant, the BOG volume flow at production (export) plants and LNG import (re-gasification) terminals is much larger and large differences in volume flows are caused by increased heat leakage during loading and unloading of the LNG tankers.
